John Santos was born in San Francisco, California, November 1, 1955, he was raised in the Puerto Rican and Cape Verdean traditions of his family, surrounded by music. The fertile musical environment of the San Francisco Bay Area shaped his career in a unique way.

His studies of Afro-Latin music have included several trips to New York, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil and Colombia. He is known for his innovative use of traditional forms and instruments in combination with contemporary music, and has earned much respect and recognition as a prolific performer, composer, teacher, writer, radio programmer, and record/event producer whose career has spanned five decades.

John Santos, and his stellar Sextet shed light on the historical and cultural significance of Latin Jazz, as well as its aesthetic characteristics pertaining to instrumentation, rhythm, interpretation and improvisation. Organized in 2003, they specialize in exciting concerts and educational presentations from lecture/demonstrations to detailed clinics focusing on any number of relevant subjects such as composition, arrangement, rhythmic development, stylistic interpretation, studio performance, etc. Their repertoire consists of exciting original arrangements of Latin American classics and Jazz standards from the US, as well as original compositions. Equally at home with a dance or concert repertoire, The John Santos Sextet presents a wide range of styles and rhythms for audiences of all ages.

Our weekly summer concerts in the Healdsburg Plaza from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. provide an eclectic and unique line-up of bands, and have been assembled to please a wide array of musical interests. Food vendors will be on-hand to offer locally sourced food for sale starting at 5pm, with the music beginning at 6pm. Complimentary bike valet services are available every Tuesday during our summer concert series. This event is hosted by Healdsburg Community Services and supported by the following sponsors Healdsburg Chamber/Stay Healdsburg, Big John’s Market, and Rotary Club of Healdsburg Noon.
