Crafted at Appellation: Japanese Paper & Fabric Marbling

Join artist and maker Robert Mahar for this playful introduction to suminagashi, a Japanese marbling technique that creates beautifully muted patterns of color that are transferred onto paper and fabric.

Perfectly suited for beginners, participants will learn best practices for working with these floating inks, and creative ways to manipulate them on the surface of a water bath to produce the most dynamic patterns. Robert will help you capture your beautiful marbled designs on a variety of papers and silk handkerchiefs, and show you a few of the infinite ways you can incorporate these materials into future projects.

All materials are included. Each student will take home an individual set of marbling inks, brushes, water pan, a variety of paper, and silk handkerchiefs. Please wear clothing and shoes that you won’t mind getting splashed with water or (possible, but unlikely!) stained with ink.

About the instructor: Robert Mahar is a California-based artist and educator who teaches and develops hands-on projects based in historical craft traditions. He’s also a proud contestant alumni, and subsequent associate producer, on NBC’s crafting competition show Making It with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman.
