Howard Ashman and Alan Menken gave the world this camp classic in 1982. They based musical (loosely) on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors, with Menken’s score featuring spectacular music: early 1960s-style rock and roll, doo-wop, and early Motown.
The story centers on meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn, who stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down-and-out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-this-world origins and its intent toward global domination!
